Welcome Back 2016-2017

August 18, 2016

Dear Eastlawn Parents,

We are excited to welcome you and your family to Eastlawn for the 2016-17 school year. This letter is meant to give you information regarding start and end times, doors to enter and exit, drop off information and an overview of staff changes.

I would like to introduce Ms. Kaitlyn Wysopal-Kindergarten Teacher, Ms. Lindy Coon- 1st Grade Teacher, Ms. Megan Frost- 2nd Grade Teacher, Ms. Candace Burns- 4th Grade Teacher, Ms. Amanda Ladach- 5th Grade Teacher, Mr. Justin Doughty- 5th Grade Teacher and Ms. Kelsey Hathaway is our new Music teacher. All of our new additions to Eastlawn have outstanding skills and experiences to offer our students and staff. We currently have two more hires that are going through the Human Resource process after just being hired and I will announce their names soon. I can’t wait for you to meet everyone!

You will receive an email on August 29th indicating which teacher your child has been assigned to. Please call the office to update or give us your email address. There will not be any letters sent through the postal mail service. Eastlawn has moved to a full digital platform and all communication is through emails. Please be diligent in making sure your email addresses are up to date.

We will hold our annual Curriculum and Title One Open House earlier this year. Please join us on September 1st from 6:00-7:45 to meet your child’s teacher face to face and to hear about the academic programs and community resources that help make Eastlawn a wonderful place to learn. We will invite all parents and students in the gym at 6:00-6:15 to share some up and coming information that pertains to all families. We will then send you to the classrooms to meet your child’s teacher. You will choose from two sessions: 6:20-7:00 or 7:05-7:45. Each session is the same in the case you have multiple students here at Eastlawn and you need to get into more than one classroom.

Our Eastlawn Community School Model Team continues to work toward increasing our attendance rates and increasing our academic achievement. The attendance process is attached. Please remember to bring in or fax any doctor’s note or other well-being appointment note for the child as any absence with a doctor’s note will not be counted toward truancy. Always call the attendance hotline if your child will be missing school for any reason: 923-7113.

Parents, you can track your own child’s attendance (and grades for 4th and 5th graders) on the Home Access Center which is on the Midland Public School website. This is a GREAT tool to keep up to date with your child’s academic progress and attendance. Visit www.midlandps.org. Please go to the website and sign up. After getting on the main page of the Midland Public Schools website, click on “Parents” and scroll down the menu and click on the “Home Access Center”. Follow the directions to register if you haven’t done so already.

At Eastlawn we preserve a 90 minute language arts block in all of our classrooms. Your child’s teacher will let you know when that 90 minute block is during their school day.  We ask that you schedule appointments for your child outside of the school day, as much as possible, and be especially aware of this protected block of time.  Your child’s teacher will talk more about this at our Curriculum Night.

The start time for the school day is 8:38 a.m. Your child will line up at the Jefferson entrance for grades K-1, the front door for grades 2-3, and the front door east of the gym for grades 4-5. We have very little parking at Eastlawn and with the large number of students, please drop your child off at the sidewalk.  PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN THE BUS LOADING ZONE. We will have a lot of adult help to guide them to the correct doors. Teachers will pick up their students at 8:33 a.m. when the bell rings at the outside door. All children will be offered a breakfast in their classroom every morning.  Kindergarten parents and those new to Eastlawn are more than welcome to bring your children in the first day. After this, parents are asked to drop students off outside to their classroom line.  There is a parking lot to the east on the other side of the playground that you may use and you may also use the Community Center lot by the blue water tower.

PLEASE be sure that your email address and phone numbers are updated. Call our office at 923-7112.

We will continue to provide a safe and secure environment this year at Eastlawn. All doors, except the front door, will be locked after students enter the building in the morning.  If you need the wheelchair accessible entrance at the back, ring the bell and we will let you in.  The front door has a camera that allows office staff to see who is entering the building.  If you come in during the school day, we ask that you register in the office and get a name tag.

Our Back to School Picnic sponsored by our PTO will be held on September 14, 2016 at 5:00-8:00 p.m.  This is an evening of fun for the whole family, a chance for you to talk with other families and have some good old fashioned family fun.  You will receive more information on these upcoming events soon. Please plan on joining us!

There is nothing more important to us that the well-being and education of your child. We are here to make sure your child is learning in a safe and nurturing environment.  Communication with you is vital to the process, please call us with any comments, questions, and concerns at 923-7112.

Looking forward to another great year at Eastlawn!

We are together in learning,
